Framework for Understanding Economic Diversity Keynote

Do some students laugh when they are disciplined? Economic realities create ways of thinking and behaving. The closer one is to merely "surviving", the less time there is for the pursuit of learning. Hidden rules of behavior, language registers, resources, interventions, discipline, and creating relationships are the major topics to be discussed in understanding and successfully teaching children from generational poverty.

Meeting The Educational Needs Of African American Boys

Examine the hidden rules of African American males and receive methods and strategies for building significant relationships and promoting higher academic achievement.

African American males often operate within a “hidden rule system” that is vastly different from the "middle class rule system" that governs America’s schools. Because the majority of public school teachers are female, white, and middle class, rule conflict is often inevitable. This conflict is evident by the number of minority males who are placed in Special Education and in alternative school placements.

This workshop examines the hidden rules of minority males in general and minority males living in poverty in particular. Methods and strategies for building significant relationships and promoting higher academic achievement are also presented. Participants will be given the opportunity to evaluate real-life classroom scenarios and to dialogue about appropriate interventions and approaches.

Workshop Format:

One Day or Half-day
